My pet has difficulty going up and down the stairs, should I be concerned?

Yes. The first instinct of your pet is to hide any pain they may be experiencing, but sometimes there are signs that you may notice. When your pet has problems using the stairs, they may have an orthopedic condition. Other signs you can look out for include:

  • Stiffness/limping
  • Hesitance to jump or run
  • Weight loss

What are common orthopedic conditions in pets?

Orthopedic conditions in pets are not universal. Some pets are more likely to experience certain conditions due to their weight, size, age or breed. Common conditions we see and treat in our hospital includes:

  • Hip dysplasia
  • Fractures
  • Arthritis
  • Torn ligaments
  • Disc disease

My pet has an orthopedic condition. How can I support them?

The first step is to get their condition diagnosed and treated. Our veterinarian may prescribe oral medications, exercises or surgery to treat your pet’s illness. At home, you can provide comfort to your pet by administering the medications as prescribed and following the exercises to get them back to their normal self. You can also make sure their beds are comfortable for resting and their food and water are easily accessible so they don’t exhaust themselves.
